Located in Rwanda’s northern Gakenke District, the Dukunde Kawa Musasa Cooperative was established in 2000 and is operated by around 300 local farmers—about 20% of whom are women. One of its key washing stations, Mbilima CWS, began operations in 2007. Sitting at an altitude of 2,200 meters, Mbilima processes coffee in an environment blessed with rich natural resources and the meticulous care of local producers, consistently resulting in high-quality lots year after year.

The cherries processed at Mbilima are cultivated across 72 hectares of farmland and hold multiple international organic certifications. After harvest, the cherries undergo careful hand-sorting on African raised beds, followed by approximately 24 days of sun-drying. The high elevation and stable climate—averaging 17–18°C with annual rainfall between 1,300 and 1,400 mm—are key to producing coffees with vibrant flavor and a full, structured body.

The farmers of this region continue to honor traditional practices, working near the historic site of the former residence of King Mibambwe, and devote themselves each season to cultivating exceptional coffee. Dukunde Kawa is also certified by international sustainability standards, including Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance, reflecting their commitment to environmentally and socially responsible farming.

This cup offers a juicy fruitiness and a lingering sweet finish that lifts your spirits. Thanks to its low moisture content (below 9%), we begin roasting at a moderate charge temperature. To highlight the coffee’s vibrant character, we keep the roast time short—just under 9 minutes. Even in green form, the beans carry a sweet, aromatic fragrance.

From the first sip to the last, as the cup cools, a gentle sweetness continues to unfold. You'll find bright notes of mandarin orange and cherry, followed by herbal undertones and a plum-like sweetness as the temperature drops. What stood out most during cupping was the texture—smooth and soft, enhancing both the sweetness and the clean finish.

We hope this vivid cup, carefully cultivated by the people of Dukunde Kawa, brings a touch of warmth to your everyday moments.
